Abstract Abstract Abstract AAbbssttrraacctt Saul Bellow, the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1976, is considered as one of the most famous writers in modernAmerican literary area and enjoys reputation and status comparable with that of his predecessors Faulkner, Hemingway, and Steinbeck. In 1975, he published his novel Humboldt’s Gift. As one of his most important long novels, it draws critics’ wide attention. Critics have analyzed its narrative arts and profound theme from different angles such as modernism, post-modernism, existentialism, transcendentalism and realism. They mainly focus on the images of male protagonists and transcendental ideology and existential elements rooted in the novel, while the female images in this novel are often ignored. By a close reading, the author finds out it is feasible to carry on a study of female images under male protagonists’ narration from the perspective of the resisting reader. In this sense, this dissertation is aimed at revealing the fact that female images are in the state of being distorted and demonized by applying the strategy of resisting reading put forward by Judith Fetterley.In orderto disclose elements behind the distortion offemale images, the author also employs power relations between the two sexes put forward by Michel Foucault.Thisdissertationwouldbedividedintothreeparts: The first part is introduction. It mainly introduces Bellow’s literary achievement, the current situation of research on Humboldt’sGiftfrom home and abroad, assumption, methodology andcontributions.
