LOW DELAY FOVEATED VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS OVER WIRELESS CHANNELS Sanghoon Lee, Alan C. Bovik and Young Yong Kim Laboratory for Image and Video Engineering Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX 78712-1084 ABSTRACT The great potential of \foveated imaging lies in the entropy reduction relative to the original image while minimizing the loss of visual information. Utilizing hu- man foveation combined with video compression, as well as communication and human-machine interface techniques, more ecient multimedia services are ex- pected to be provided in the near future. In this paper, we introduce a prototype for foveated visual communi- cations as one of future human interactive multime- dia applications, and demonstrate the bene t of the foveation over fading statistics in the downtown area of Austin, Texas. In order to compare the performance with regular video, we use spatial/temporal resolution and source transmission delay as the evaluation crite- ria. 1. INTRODUCTION Exploiting the nonuniform property of locally band- limited foveated images, it is possible to improve the visual quality of [1] or reduce the computation com- plexity of motion estimation [2]. Using H.263 video, a CIF \News sequence was compressed at 30 Kbps (P frame bit rate) and is available for demonstration at a website for performance comparison [3]. The entropy dierence/ratio between original and foveated images corresponds to the amount of saved bits/compression gain. In addition, the entropy re- duction results in scaling down the bit rate range in foveated video. Using a maximum quantization param- eter, the minimum rate of each video can be obtained. The dierence of the minimum rate becomes the chan- nel adaptation gain, which is an advantage of using foveated video over regular video. Hence, foveated video compression has great potential for improving the per- formance of very low bit rate coding/communication applications. In thi
