Comparative Study of English And Cinese Euphemisms in Religion 摘 要 委婉语是一种不明说的,能使人感到愉快或者含糊的说法,代替具有令人不悦或不够尊重的表达方法.它既是一种修辞手法,也是一种语言现象,委婉语的英文说法来自希腊,意为好的说法。 由于国际交往和文化交流的需要,加之宗教对于中英国家在禁忌，礼仪等方面具有深远影响，本文对英汉两种委婉语在宗教方面加以比较。 本文由五部分组成包括引言和结论。 第一部分引言对委婉语介绍定义，历史缘由和提出人们为何选择用委婉语来表达他们的思想看法。对比性指出英汉委婉语大同小异，区别之一即在与宗教有关的委婉语。第二部分罗列英语在宗教方面关于死亡和称谓的委婉语，解释引起这一现象的原因。第三部分列举在中国宗教方面关于死亡和称谓的委婉语，解释了这一现象的多方原因。第四部分对英汉委婉语两者进行对比分析，指出英汉委婉语存大同的同时存在宗教背景的差异。结论部分重申英汉委婉语在宗教方面表达不尽相同，存在文化背景方面的差异，基于不同的宗教信仰。 关键词: 委婉语; 禁忌; 宗教; 死亡; 称谓 Abstract Euphemism are mild, agreeable, or roundabout words used in place of coarse, painful, or offensive ones. It is a figure of speech, also a way of culture phenomenon. The term originated from the Greek, eu, meaning well or sounding good and pheme meaning speech. Owing to the fact that the international intercourse and cross-cultural communication requires better understanding of western and Chinese cultures and that religion produces great influence on decencies and taboos in English-speaking countries and China, the comparative study of work between English and Chinese euphemisms in religion is made in this paper. The paper is composed of five parts including an introduction and a conclusion. Part One presents a general view of the definition, history and why people use euphemisms to express their thought in tactful terms. It is comparatively pointed out that the differences between Chinese and English euphemisms in religion are the same in the main but with slight differences, one of them being in euphemisms in religion. Part Two lists the euphemisms of death and the name -addressing in religion and explains the cause of the phenomenon in English. Part Three enumerates the euphemisms of death and the name-addressing in Chinese. It also points out the cause of the phenomenon. Part Four bases its analytic approach on the comparison between Chinese and English euphemisms and indicates that there exist the differences between Chinese and English euphemisms in religion due
