Comparative Study on Sexism in Language and Its Reform 中英性别歧视对比及其改革 Abstract Since the early twentieth century, especially since the feminist movement in the 1960s which originated in America and then spread all over the world, there have been changes of attitudes towards the language and sex issue. Many feminist began to make a study of sexism in language which is generally classified into sociolinguistics which is the science that studies the relationship between the use of language and the social structures in which the users of language live. A major issue in sociolinguistic studies has been the relationship between sex and language, and how it is presented. By looking at the sexism in language and relating it to the relevant linguistic theories, this thesis attempts to make a study of sexism in language through comparisons with the purpose of evoking people’s awareness of chasing linguistic equality, further achieving the real equality of both sexes. The thesis firstly introduce the main argument point: language reflects social reality, and it conveys the discrimination against women. Besides, many famous linguists were introduced, such as Lakoff, Dale. Spender… the second part mainly contributes to discuss the embodiment of sexist language in both English and Chinese. It mainly divides into 4 parts, including: (1) terms and naming, (2) word meaning, (3) word order, (4) gender stereotypes of discourse. Women were always invisible and depreciated in these factors. The chapter three traces reasons for the origin of sexism in English and Chinese. It involves three factors which are historical context, sex roles, and socialization through that the social bias for women was deep-rooted in human’s mind. After that, the thesis tries to analyze the reason of changing sexist language from two factors: (1) the requirement of social change (2) the realization of women’s liberation.
