Natural rubber belongs to the polymer family: these can be of natural or synthetic origin. The products are found in abundance everywhere: in plastic materials, film, fibres, protein or cellulose. Natural rubber belongs to the elastomer class. A feature of these substances is their high molecular weight. The molecules are in the form of linear chains or macromolecules. The basic unit is called a monomer. This is generally an organic product, often composed of carbon and hydrogen. The monomer in natural rubber is isoprene. The polymer is composed of long chains, the composition of which affects the properties. The longer the chain, the more regular and elastic it will be. All these units are placed in the same manner in the chain, which is why natural rubber is said to be 100% stereoregular (or 100% CIS). This is a property specific to natural rubber that synthetic rubber does not have. To link the chains together as regularly as possible, a molecular interlink is used, called chemical curing: this is vulcanisation. In fact, the more consistent the network formed by the chains, the better the elasticity. For centuries now, there have been numerous industrial applications for the properties of rubber. * Rubber was used by South American Indians who tapped it from a tree called the Hevea.
