Knowledge aims: 1) Get students to know the similarities and differences about ancient and modern Olympic Games. 2)Get students to learn the useful new words and expressions in this part: ancient, compete, ,medal, volunteer, regular, basis, athlete, admit, stadium, host, replace, motto, stand for, take part in, as well 2. Ability aims: 1) Develop students’ reading ability and practice fast-reading, careful-reading, discussion. 2) Enable students to learn to talk about the most impressive things in Beijing Olympic Games. 3. Emotion aims: Arouse students’ great interest in the Olympic Games. II. Teaching important points Train the students’ reading ability—fast-reading and careful-reading. Get students to learn more about the basic knowledge on the Olympic Games. III. Teaching difficult points 1.Enable students to learn to talk about the Olympic Games. 2.Let students learn to use comparing and contrasting when reading. IV. Teaching skills 1) Task-based teaching and learning. 2) Discussion V. Teaching aids Multi-media VI. Teaching procedures Step1 lead-in Enjoy a video of the opening ceremony of 2008 Olympic Games to lead in the topic: the Olympic Games. Step 2 Warming up 1. Ask students to answer or discuss the following questions: What impresses you most in Beijing Olympic Games? Show students some pictures of bird’s nest, water cube, torch cloud and some athletes. Step 3 Pre-reading Looking and reviewing Show some pictures to review some past Olympic Games and go back to the first Olympic Games . Imagining Ask students to imagine that a man from ancient Greece comes to the present day and wants to know something about modern Olympics. Step 4 Reading Watching and listening for the main idea Two students play the dialogue about some basic similarities and differences of the Olympic Games, and ask students to answer the questions: How often are the Olympic Games held?
