E ar th Scien ce F r on2 t ier s, 2005, 12 ( 4) : 3532 364 Abstr act : Rich introduced the geometry of fault2bend fold of the Appalachian Mountains in 1934. H alf a centu2 ry later, Suppe first quantified it, and established relationships between fold geometry, fault geometry and fault slip that led to the foundation of the theory of fault2 related folding. Since then, much of progress has been made not only in establishing the geometric and kinemat ic models of the end2members such as fault2propa2 gation folding and fault2 detachment folding, but also in putting forward a series of superimposed models of fault2related folds such as imbricate structures, tectonic wedges, and interference structures, et c. . Concerning syntect onic sedimentation, growth fault2related folding theory was set forth giving a quantit ative represent ation between sedimentation and the fault2 slip rate, folding rate, and uplifting rate.
