人教新课标(选修)Book Ⅵ Unit 1 Art Period 1 Warming-up, Pre-reading and Reading A Short History of Western Painting Analysis of the teaching materials This is the first teaching period which includes warming-up, pre-reading and reading, based on the topic of the history of western painting. This period introduces four major periods of western painting: the middle ages, the Renaissance, Impressionism and modern art, including the customs and faiths that influenced them, and their styles. After this period, students will be able to have a good knowledge of related words and expressions, which will be quite beneficial for their later learning in this unit. Besides, they are also able to learn how to enjoy and appreciate a painting in everyday life. The warming-up part presents the key words, which is intended to arouse the students’ interests and prepare them for reading. There are three questions in the pre-reading part aimed at activating their previous knowledge.The reading passage titled “A short history of western painting” describes four different western painting styles in the order of time. Analysis of the students Although students have already had some knowledge of paintings home and abroad, it’s certain that there exist information gaps between them. What’s more, it’s important for students to talk and share the information they got from the passage in English. Besides, they need to learn how to appreciate paintings.
