AbstractInrecentyears,theresearchanddevelopmentofvariousdevicesandtechnologiesrelatedtoDenseWavelengthDivisionMultiplexing(DWDM)hasbeenthemostimportantresearchdirectionofopticalfibercommunication.DWDM10GigabitSmallFormFactorPluggable(XFP)moduleisoneofthesehotspots.AccordingtoestimationbyICCSZ,thetunableXFPmodulewillreplacethecurrentfixed-wavelengthDWDMXFPmodulegradually.ThecriticaltechnologyofthetunableXFPisthetunableopticaltransmittermodule,whiletherearelittleadequatemanufacturers.Inthisthesis,preliminarystudyofthetunableopticaltransmittermoduleisperformedbeforemassproduction.Firstly,thetheoreticalreseachabouttheDigitalSupermodeDistributedBraggReflector(DS-DBR)laserandMach-Zehnder(MZ)modulatorisstudied.TheprincipleoftunablelaserwavelengthselectionandMZmodulatormodulationisanalyzedsystematically.MathematicalmodeloftheMZmodulatorisestablished.SimulationofnegativechirpandzerochirpMZmodulatorisconductedtoprovidereferenceforthefollowingmoduleperformancetest.Secondly,asimpleautomatictestsystemisdesignedandbuiltuptotesttheperformanceoflaserandmodulator.ThecurrentorvoltageoutputofcorrespondinginstumentiscontrolbyVisualStudio2005,meanwhiletestdatafromtestinstrumentsarereadandsavedtoExcelforanalysis.Laserthresholdcurrent,outputfrequencyandpowerstabilityofallchannals,extinctionratioandhalf-wavevoltageparametersofthemodulatoraretested.Finally,theactualapplicationofthemoduleissimulated.ThetransmittermoduleisweldedtoaspeciallydesignedPCBanda10Gb/shighspeedmodulationvoltagegeneratedbyPPGisconnectedtothetwomodulationarmsofMZviatwocoaxialcableconnectors.Thenbacktobackeyediagramofthetransmittermodule,dispersionpenaltyof75kmlongdistancesingnaltransmissionandOpticalSignalNoiseRatio(OSNR)penaltyofdifferenttransmissiondistancearetested.Eyediagramtestshowsthatextinctionratioisgreaterthan12dBandtemplatemarginisgreaterthan15%.Powerpenaltyislessthan3dBover75kmtransmission.OSNRpenaltyislessthan1dBoverdispersionrangeof-300ps/nmto1400ps/nm.Alltestresultsshowthatthemodulehasgoodperformance,andm
