中 美 文 化 比 较 My Review on The Wedding Banquet 任课教师： 学生姓名： 学号： 专 业： 电气工程与自动化 Without any special effect, the wedding banquet is a simple feature movie which tells a story involving the problems of homosexual and cultural conflicts. However, there is no doubt that it’s an extraordinarily excellent movie, leaving me a deep and lasting impression. At the very beginning, I thought it might be a hilarious comedy due to the title of movie. However, I felt much sympathy for the main characters in this movie and it made me think a lot. Subtly arranged by the director Ang Lee, this special story takes place between people with totally different cultural background. Weitong Gao, a young man from Taiwan living in the USA, has a handsome American “girlfriend” Simon. Due to the generation gap and the huge chasm of Chinese culture and American culture, Weitong doesn’t mention a word about his sexual orientation to his parents, until his parents eagerly ask him to get married as soon as possible. At Simons insistence,Weitong doesn’t have another choice, but to have a pseudo-marriage with his tenants Weiwei, an young artist from mainland China. A farce, however, unfolds between the people of two generations and different cultural backgrounds. Needless to say, the Wedding Banquet is filled with the cultural shocks. The vital divergence is perfectly showed in the notion of marriage. Deeply influenced by Chinese tradition, Weitong’s parents are eager to concern about the marriage of their son so that one day they can share the happiness of their grandson or granddaughter’s birth. Same as most Chinese parents, they hold the view that one of key points of a marriage is to generate an offspring as a way to expand the development of their family. While Simon probably feels embarrassed about this, he still helps Weitong to take care of his parents.
