The term sustainable development was first popularized in 1987 by the World Commission on Environment and Development. In essence, it is concerned with meeting the needs of people today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. People often misinterpret sustainable development as focusing solely on environmental issues. In reality, sustainable development is a much broader concept which emphasizes the balance and integration of the three sustainability pillars of economic development, social harmony and environmental protection. ; Human beings should sustain the earth resources while seeking development. Human consumption should be occurring at a rate within Earths capacity to support it. People should care the habitats and development of the future generations besides the interests and rights of theirs today. Population growth and the developmental pressures spawned by an unequal distribution of wealth are two major driving forces that are altering the earth in ways that threaten the long-term health of humans and other species on the planet. Human health is dependent on the healthy functioning of the earths ecosystem.
