Hiroshima: the “Liveliest” City in Japan by Jacques Danvoir Comment on the 2 translations Every here and there, a doorway gives a glimpse of a sunlit courtyard, perhaps before a mosque or a caravanserai… 1. (李正林,张名高 20) My comments on Example 1 Every here and there, a doorway gives a glimpse of a sunlit courtyard, perhaps before a mosque or a caravanserai… 1. Every here and there means quite often at one place or another, not everywhere. Hence, the expression of 不管…都… is not an equivalent to the original idea. 2. The fact is that you are now (and actually throughout the whole text) definitely inside the bazaar, not in a Mosque or a caravansary. This translation, however, either obscures or misinterprets this fact, seeming to suggest that the writer (or any visitor) is looking into the bazaar from outside. My comments on Example 2 Every here and there, a doorway gives a glimpse of a sunlit courtyard, perhaps before a mosque or a caravanserai… (李正林,张名高 20) My comments: 1. Every here and there means every now and then, often at one place or another or quite often, not everywhere Therefore I think this translation is at least not accurate. In a bazaar In a bazaar courtyard: an area enclosed by walls or buildings, often opening off a street my translation Every here and there, a doorway gives a glimpse of a sunlit courtyard, perhaps before a mosque or a caravanserai… Background Information 1. Hiroshima, the city By the beginning of WWII, Hiroshima was the 7th largest city in Japan, with a population of 350,000. During the war it was a regional army headquarters as well as a major rail centre and producer of war materials. 2. The atomic
