The Study of Grammar Faculty of Foreign Language Harbin Normal University Yang Dong The Purpose for this Course With the rapid development of linguistics, different grammars came into existence. We set up this course so that the undergraduates have a very general knowledge of the major features of different schools of grammar and have a deep insight of the properties of language. The most important thing is that we can apply these theoretical views into our language teaching or learning. Course Planning Chapter 1 General Introduction of the course and some basic grammatical Categories (four Periods) Chapter 2 The beginning of Modern Linguistics and American Descriptive and Structuralist Linguistics( four periods) Chapter 3 Chomsky and Transformational Generative Grammar (six periods) Chapter 4 Systematic-Functional Grammar(10 period) Review and Examination General Introduction of the Course Since 1950s(saussure), linguistics have developed rapidly abroad. As far as the grammatical theories are concerned, we can never see the unified grammatical theories. Various grammatical theories have appeared. Some of the grammatical theories are in opposition, while others are approaching each other. Some linguists managed to find a new way to study grammar. They bring out their effort to make investigations to linguistic mechanism from different angles, which greatly deepens and widens the study of linguistic phenomena. Therefore it is very necessary for us to have a basic understanding of these theories. However, among a larger number of them (structuralist grammar, stratificational grammar, TG grammar, Case grammar, relational grammar, Montague(蒙塔格语法) Grammar, functional grammar), we can only discuss those schools of grammatical theories which are influential and widely spread, such as structuralist grammar, TG grammar and Systematic-Functional Grammar.
