Until fairly recently, the 5000/C54x was best positioned for high-performance “single channel” applications like modems, set-top boxes, cellular handsets, or dedicated subsystems. However, with the release of new, more powerful devices, using ‘C6000-like peripherals, the C5000 family will offer code-compatibility for customers developing both multi-channel systems (infrastructure) as well as single-channel systems (terminals). The c54x would be used in multi-channel applications for which power consumption (for example, battery life), as well as processing power, is important. The ‘C6000 platform is the best choice for “multi-channel” raw performance intensive applications, such as central office infrastructure type switches, basestations, pooled modems, multi-channel voice processing systems, cable modems, and digital subscriber loop systems.
