Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute, Nanjing, 210024, China.; 2.Department of Hydraulic Engineering, Tsinghua Universinty, Beijing, 100084, China. ) Abstract: Natural geological materials are strongly heterogeneous. The heterogeneity is mainly attributed to the irregular spatial distribution of bonding force between particles. A geological material can be regarded as a structural medium, consisting of bonded lumps or blocks and weakened bands or surfaces with quite different bondings in the different parts of medium. In this paper the system characteristics of geological materials are analyzed . A new theory called breakage mechanics is introduced for geological materials. The theory regards the geological materials as a double-medium body composed of structural lumps and structural bands. The system approach of breakage mechanics is expounded.
