High-Context and the Low-Context Communication Hall ’s view Culture High –Context Culture Low-Context Culture What is context? The Hall define context as “the information that surrounds an event; it is inextricably bound up with the meaning of the event.” High-Context Culture A high context (HC) communication or message is one in which most of the information is already in the person, while very little is in the coded, explicitly transmitted part of the message. High-context cultures tend to be more aware of their surroundings and their environment and do not rely on verbal communication as their main information channel. People of high-context culture Native American, Latin American Japanese Chinese and Korean In high-context culture, people are very homogeneous with regard to experiences, information networks, and the like. 高语境(HC)：交际双方在语言交际过程中，语义的产生不依赖于语言本身，而依赖于一些非语言动作。特点：说话人不直接，较含蓄，不明朗东方人，拉美人 Example: proposal features Ignoring the explicit verbal message Emphasizing the concept of harmony Avoiding to say “no” The important informations are expressed by situation cues 高语境交际特点 1. 内隐，含蓄 2. 暗码信息 3. 较多非语言编码 4. 反应很少外露 5.（圈）内（圈）外有别 6. 人际关系紧密 7.高承诺 8. 时间处理高度灵活 Low-context culture A low context (LC) communication is just the opposite of high context culture; the mass of the information is vested in the explicit code.
