After this period, the students are supposed to 1 understand the relations between language and culture. 2 master the following notions: culture, Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, cultural overlap and diffusion and intercultural communication. How does it affect our choices of linguistic forms? (2)What are the differences between diglossia and bilingualism? (3)How do social factors influence the use of language? 2 Check homework. 2 Definitions of culture (1) Culture, in a broad sense, means the total way of life of a people, including the patterns of belief, customs, objects, institutions, techniques, and languages that characterize the life of the human community. (2) In a narrow sense, culture may refer to local or specific practice, beliefs of customs, which can be mostly found in folk culture, enterprise culture or food culture etc. (3) Types of culture: Material Culture: concrete, substantial and observable. Spiritual Culture: abstract, ambiguous, and hidden. What has been grown and brought up with (through beliefs, traditions, education and other institutional mechanisms); Culture changes slowly with the development of the society. 3 The relationship between language and culture (1)? Language expresses cultural reality and embodies cultural identity. (2)? Culture affects its people’s imagination or common dreams which are mediated through the language and reflected in their life. (3)? Culture is a wider system that completely includes language as a subsystem. Linguistic competence is one variety of cultural competence and speech behaviour is one variety of social behavior.
