An Analysis of the Cultural Conflicts Reflected in CeremonyAbstract:American Indian writer Leslie Marmon Silko’s novel Ceremony reveals the cultural conflicts between the white people and the American indigenous Indians, that is, the cultural conflicts between the dominant culture and subculture. The paper aims to analyze the reasons of cultural conflicts reflected in the novel Ceremony from an intercultural perspective so as to help us have a better understanding about how to conduct an effective intercultural communication. The paper contains four parts: the first part briefly introduces the novel and the cultural conflicts in the novel; the second part analyzes the reasons of the cultural conflicts; the third part gives some conflicts-avoiding suggestions in terms of cultural conflicts in the novel; and the last part draws a conclusion of the paper. Key Words:cultural conflict, Ceremony, intercultural communication摘 要:美国印第安作家莱斯利·马蒙·希尔科的小说《典仪》向我们揭露了美国白人和印第安人之间的文化冲突,即主流文化与亚文化之间的文化冲突。本文旨在从跨文化交际学角度分析小说《典仪》中文化冲突的原因,以此帮助我们更好地了解怎样进行良好的跨文化交际。本文共分四部分:第一部分简要介绍了小说及其中的文化冲突,第二部分浅析了小说中文化冲突的原因,第三部分针对于小说中的文化冲突提出一些解决冲突的建议,最后一部分总结得出本文结论。关键词:文化冲突;典仪;跨文化交际PartⅠIntroduction1.1 Introduction to the Novel Ceremony Leslie Marmon Silko is one of the most distinguished modern American Indian writers in American literary history. In 1981, selected as one of the “exceptionally talented individuals” by MacArthur Foundation, Silko received five-year awards of support and acquired a uniquely remarkable praise from the New York Times Book Review as “the most accomplished Indian writer of her generation”. As a Native American novelist, Silko’s works are primarily concerned with the relations between different cultures and between human beings and the natural world, especially the Native American’s life and traditions.Silko’s first and foremost novel Ceremony published in 1978, is a powerful novel that tells the story about Tayo, a mixed-blood Indian young man’s healing process.
