Supplementary Online Material Supplemental Methods Subjects. One-hundred and eighty-five healthy, right-handed individuals (94 men and 91 women) participated in this study as part of our ongoing project to investigate the associations among brain imaging, cognitive functions, aging, genetics, and daily habits (Takeuchi et al., 2011a, 2011b; Takeuchi et al., 2010a, 2010b, 2011c, 2011d; Taki et al., 2010). Data from subjects in this study are to be used in other studies irrelevant to the theme of this study. Some of the subjects who participated in this study also became subjects of intervention studies (psychological data and imaging data recorded before the intervention were used in this study). In this experiment, psychological tests and MRI scans that are not described in this manuscript were performed together with ones that are described in this manuscript. In brief, on the experiment day, MRI scans as well as psychological tests were performed. Furthermore, some questionnaires (all of the questionnaires used in this study are included here) were handed to subjects who were then asked to complete them during the day. Personality measures as well as other questionnaires irrelevant to the above mentioned intervention studies were handed to each subject 2 weeks to 1 day before the experiment day for MRI scans and cognitive tests, and the subjects were asked to complete these before the experiment day. Other than the MPRAGE sequence used in this study, diffusion-weighted images, fMRI scans of the N-back working memory task and resting state, arterial spin labeling images for measuring regional cerebral blood flow during rest, and fMRI scans of emotional response were also acquired [the last set of scans were obtained from only a subset of subjects in this study (96 subjects among 185 subjects)]. The mean age of the subjects was 21.0 years [standard deviation (SD), 1.8]. All subjects were college, university, postgraduate students or within one-year after graduation
