Abstract Marriage customs and cultures vary from East to West. This paper will focus on the differences of marriage customs so as to give an analysis of the difference between Chinese and western culture. The paper will demonstrate Chinese and western marriage customs respectively and explore the underlying reasons behind the difference. All the data of this paper is obtained by an extensive reading of books and newspapers, both in the library and on the internet. It can be concluded that different cultural backgrounds, religions and attitudes towards marriage result in the difference between Chinese and western marriage customs. It is recommended that the difference between Chinese and western marriage customs should be taken into consideration in mixed marriage and cross-cultural communica
