We used maize and sorghum seedings as t he material to investigate t he protective effect s of p hosp hate buffer on improving resistance and decreasing inj ury of sulp hurous acid from membrane lipid p eroxi dation . The result s showed t hat t he activities of sup eroxide dismuiase ( SOD) increased , t he content s - · of sup eroxide anion radical (O2 ) and malondialdehyde ( MDA) decreased , t he levels of electrolytic leakages decreased , and t he seedings resistance improved . After treated wit h t he different concentra tion of sulp hurous acid , t he seedings sprayed wit h p hosp hate buffer were less harmed t han not - sprayed. The protective effect s were obvious and varied wit h t he concentration of sulp hurous acid and plant sp ecies. The effect on sorghum was higher t han t hat on maize . K
