The thesis aims to study the conflict of gender and class relationship under the patriarchal society from three aspects including the structure of binary opposition, the struggle of gender power discourse, and Tom’s epiphany from fantasy to reality. By analyzing the structure of binary opposition, we can know the conflict between the labor class and leisure class, the antithesis between male and female. Lessing discloses the hypocrisy and absurdity of the patriarchal society and challenges the authoritativeness of patriarchy by depicting a new woman image. In the struggle for the power discourse between the male and female, the sunbathing woman’s silence against three workmen’s gazes reverses her gender role in power positions. The last is Tom’s epiphany from fantasy to reality, from authenticity to inauthenticity. The sharp and long-lasting conflict between genders stems from the mutual opposition of different social strata. In general, gender and class contradictions influence each other.
