GED Bridge to Science Curriculum Overview The GED Bridge to Science curriculum familiarizes students with general science concepts through project based activities while developing the reading, writing and math skills necessary to pass the GED exam and succeed in post-secondary education. The activities, readings and materials in the Bridge to Science curriculum are designed to promote the spirit of inquiry that is at the core of scientific practice. Students in the Bridge to Science class build awareness of various roles of natural scientists, understanding of key scientific concepts and terminology, explore research and experiment design and gain insight into the complex ethical issues surrounding the field. Activities throughout the semester explore how the scientific method is applied to science fields including biology, physics, psychology and chemistry by researching, designing and conducting experiments. The Bridge to Science curriculum is divided into three units: Introduction to Science, The Cell and Experimental Design. The Introduction to Science unit focuses on the scientific process and the definition of science before introducing specific biology concepts. Students investigate questions related to foundational scientific knowledge and career choices related to the field of science. Students complete a variety of biology and general science readings, in addition to the central text: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot. The Cell unit provides students with a basic knowledge of cell structures and processes. Students explore mitosis, genetics, and current cell research issues. The Experimental Design unit builds on students’ emerging knowledge about the scientific method and allows them to perform self-directed research, design and experimentation on a topic of their choosing for the final class
