Address water challenges with joint hands for promoting sustainable development Jiao Yong Vice Minister of Water Resources, China June 8th, 2011, Marseille Dear President Mr. Loic Fauchon, Distinguished representatives of members, Ladies and Gentlemen, It is a great pleasure for me to participate in the Members Meeting of the World Water Council in the beautiful city of Marseille. First of all, on behalf of Ministry of Water Resources of China, I like to extend my warm congratulations to the opening of this Members Meeting. I would also like to take this occasion to introduce Chinese experiences in respect to integrated water resources management and views on sustainable use of water resources to World Water Council colleagues. On the World Water Day in 2011, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary-General, pointed out that as the world charts a more sustainable future, the crucial interplay among water, food and energy is one of the most formidable challenges we face. Without water there is no dignity and no escape from poverty. Water issue has never attained such high concern and emphasis from governments, received such great care from global citizens, and gotten such high attention and consideration from various international organizations like today. In the context of jointly responding to the challenges caused by climate change, this Members Meeting of the World Water Council will provide a platform for discussion, communication and cooperation. It has been realized that we must place water issue together as the top priority of sustainable development and promote governments and international communities to take much care about sustainability of water use. In this respect, I sincerely hope that this meeting will also make great contribution to the success of the sixth World Water Forum.
