Signatures of Accretion Disks in Quasar Microlensing 1 Andrew Gould Dept of Astronomy, Ohio State University, Columbus, OH 43210 6 9 Jordi Miralda-Escud´e 9 1 Dept of Physics Astronomy, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA 19104 c e e-mail gould@payne.mps.ohio-state.edu D 4 e-mail jordi@llull.physics.upenn.edu 1 1 Abstract v 4 We propose that relative variability on short time-scales of the multiple images 4 1 of a lensed quasar, after removal of the time delay, may be caused by hot spots 2 or other moving structures in the accretion disk crossing microlens caustics caused 1 6 by stellar mass objects in the lensing galaxy. Such variability has been reported 9 in the two images of 0957+561. The short durations would be due to the high / h rotation speed of the disk (v/c ∼ 0.1), rather than planetary mass objects in p −3 - the slowly moving (v/c ∼ 10 ) lens. This interpretation could be confirmed o r by finding periodicity, or correlations of the spectral and flux variations due to t s the Doppler effect in the disk. We also propose another signature of stationary a : accretion disks (with no intrinsic variability): the gradient of the magnification over v i the accretion disk should cause a relative color change between the images whose X sign and amplitude are correlated with the time derivative of the
