* THE FLAPS - fowler Fowler flaps are the most commonly used flaps on light aircraft. The Fowler flap moves back as it extends. Therefore, it creates a slot and also increases the wing area and camber * THE FLAPS – fowler types * FLIGHT CONTROLSTypes of Control Devices THE SPOILERS * Spoilers are small, hinged plates on the top portion of wings. Spoilers have the opposite effect from flaps and slats. They reduce lift by disrupting the airflow over the top of the wing. Spoilers can be used to slow an aircraft, or to make an aircraft descend, if they are deployed on both wings. Spoilers can also be used to generate a rolling motion for an aircraft, if they are deployed on only one wing. An example of a conventional airplane is shown to the left. The most common control arrangement on the Conventional Airplane is Ailerons on the main wing for roll control and a horizontal tail known as the Stabilizer with moveable Elevators for pitch control. There is also a Vertical Fin with a Rudder for directional or Yaw control. ? ????????????????????????????????????????????? Sometimes the fixed stabilizer and separate movable elevators are replaced by a single moving horizontal tail known as a Stabilator. * Fixed Slots On most light aircraft slots are formed between the wing and the flaps. We will discuss flaps below. But, first we must consider how slots increase the CLmax of the wing.
