Abstract What is more, few studies have been made of the three concepts in an integrated way. This thesis attempts to conduct a study of the use of person deixis from pragmatic empathy and de-empathy perspectives, discussing the pragmatic effects of empathy and de-empathy realized by person deixis. Since the concepts empathy and de-empathy gain the popularity in linguistic field in China, most of the articles related to them use Chinese materials for illustration. Even if English materials are chosen, scholars prefer novels to conduct the study. This thesis takes dialogues in Desperate Housewives as the data in order to make the pragmatic empathy and de-empathy understood more easily from examples that are relaxing and closely tied to the reality of the daily life.
