Discipline, in essence, is concerned with the development of internal mechanisms that allows people to control themselves but not being controlled (Blandford, 1998: 2). Students Needs Basic needs What students look for / What teacher should offer Security A safe and comfortable environment Belonging Personal attention from both teachers and students The five As: Acceptance, Attention, Appreciation, Affirmation and Affection Hope Assure students of their learning progress, help them out to document their improvements Dignity/Power Treat students as competent and valuable members of class Direct, assign and put them in charge of themselves with important tasks and maintain good conduct Enjoyment Provide activities they find engaging Work in groups with others Sense of humor Competence Relate knowledge with real-life situations Find ways to demonstrate their strength and knowledge with others (Charles, 2002:15-19) Common Teaching Mistakes Sudden interruption of an activity without warning (Thrusts) Keep students waiting when teachers get too involved in setting up materials, conversing with a student who needs extra attention, etc. (Dangles) Students attention being directed back to a previous activity after they have started a new one (Flip-Flops) Start new activit
