Authority is accepted and the desire for equality prevails. Although the iron rice bowl - the notion that the company or state will provide and that a job is for life - is less accepted now, the highest priority for most Chinese is caring for their families. Society is polarised between rich and poor, with an astonishing 354m people living below the poverty line. Despite having very few inhabitants who are not ethnic Chinese, society is highly diverse, with more languages spoken than in Europe. China is the most populous country in the world, yet one of the least diverse, with 92% of its 1.3 billion population of Han Chinese origin. Many Chinese are deeply religious, despite China being officially an atheist country. Confucianism - with its emphasis on loyalty, respect, benevolence and righteousness - remains the philosophical (not religious) foundation of Chinese values. The population is relatively highly educated and the divorce rate one of the lowest in the world. Living standards are improving, although mainly among the middle classes, and will continue to do so as China sits poised to become the next great economic superpower. to top The Taiwanese Mindset The Taiwanese have a reputation for being fun-loving, individualist and informal, while at the
