Facing the sout h, this architecture w as an earth-and-timber st ructure. The w hole arch-i tecture consisted of the foundation, the m ain body and the mount ing pat hs on the tw o sides. The m ain body had three bays in bot h longitudinal and transverse directions. In the cent er of the main body was a tortoise-shaped st ele pedestal, on the back of w hich w as a socket for erect ing the stele. The stele w as a bilingual one bearing Khitan large script characters and Chinese characters recording the historic merits of Yel?Abaoji, the Emperor Taizu of the Liao Dynasty. Referred to the historic literature, this architec- tural foundat ion is def ined as the monum ent tower of Emperor T aizu not ed in L iao S hi ( t he H istory of the Liao Dynasty) . 祖陵陵园是辽朝第一个皇帝耶律阿保 机的陵寝之地, 建于天显二年 ( 公元 927 年) 。辽祖陵位于内蒙古巴林左旗查干哈达 苏木石房子嘎查西北的一个袋形山谷中, 地 处大兴安岭的南端。祖陵陵园四面环山, 仅 在临近祖州城的东南方向有唯一的山口, 即 文献记载的/ 黑龙门0 [ 1]。其东南约 215 公里 处有奉陵邑祖州城。 龟趺山建筑基址坐落于祖陵陵园/ 黑龙 门0入口东侧山峰南面的一个相对平缓的小 山丘上( 图一) 。南出祖陵/ 黑龙门0不远处, 转折向东, 有一条古道通往祖州城北门。龟 图一 辽祖陵龟趺山建筑基址位置示
