Lecture 9 on Emily Dickinson(V5)
Lecture 9 on Emily Dickinson 艾米莉·狄金森 (1830-1886) Emily Dickinsonaround 1846–1847 Emily Dickinson The Dickinson Homestead in Amherst, the Emily Dickinson Museum 2003. Emilys father, Edward Dickinson (1803–1879), was politically prominent, serving on the Massachusetts General Court from 1838-42, the Massachusetts Senate from 1842-43, and the U.S. House of Representatives Her mother, Emily Norcross Dickinson (1804–1882), a quiet woman, was chronically ill. Her Life Emily Dickinson an innovative pre-modernist poet, but virtually unknown in her lifetime. Dickinson has come to be regarded, along with Walt Whitman, as one of the two quintessential American poets of the 19th century. Her Life Emily Dickinson lived an introverted and hermetic life. Although she wrote, at the last count, 1,789 poems, only a handful of them were published during her lifetime. Her Legacy Twentieth-century critic Harold Bloom has placed her alongside Walt Whitman, Wallace Stevens, Robert Frost, T. S. Eliot and Hart Crane as a major American poet. Editions of poetry Franklin, R. W. (ed). 1999. The Poems of Emily Dickinson. Cambridge: Belknap Press. ISBN 0674676246 Johnson, Thomas H. (ed). 1960. The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson. Boston: Little Brown Co. Her Subjects Love, death, nature, religion, immortality, pain, beauty. Features of Dickinsons Poetry Her poetry is unique and unconventional in its own way. With no titles, her poems are always quoted by their first lines. Dashes are used as a musical device to create cadence and capital letters as a means of emphasis. Features of Dickinsons Poetry Most of her poems borrow the rhymed stanzas of traditional Christian hymns, with alternating four and three beats. Many poems are centered on a single image or symbol materializing the spiritual and focused on one subject matter. Features of Dickinsons Poetry She used off-rhymes, subtle breaks of rhythm, and idiosyncratic syntax and punctuation to create fascinating word
