It produces small amounts of insulin in fasting states (between meal and during sleep) and then much larger amounts when a person eats. And with a pump we can come closer to matching this normal secretion than with injections. And, this is because pumps deliver insulin in two ways: Basal insulin (background insulin) and bolus insulin (for meals). Basal insulin is the insulin that is constantly delivered in tiny increments similar to the way a healthy pancreas secretes insulin. ?
