Firstly, it responds to a specific set of instructions in a well-defined manner. Secondly, it can execute a prerecorded list of instructions, which is referred to as a program. Modern computers are electronic and digital. The actual machinery, including wires, transistors, and integrated circuits, is called hardware; and the instructions and data are called software. All general-purpose computers require the following hardware components; ● Memory, which enables a computer to store, at least temporarily, data and program. ● Mass storage device, which allows a computer to permanently retain large amounts of data, including disk drives, tape drives, and laser discs. ● Input device, which, in the form of a keyboard and a mouse, is the conduit(channel)through which data and instructions enter a computer. ● Output device, which covers such equipment as the display screen, the printer, and various other devices through which you can see what the computer has accomplished. ● CPU, which stands as the heart, or, you may just as well say, the brain of the computer, carrying out instructions provided either by the user or the system itself. In addition to these components, many others make it possible for the basic components to work together efficiently. For example, every computer requires a bus that transmits data from one part of the computer another.
