第十一讲练习 一、英汉翻译中的省略技巧 （一）从语法角度省略 1.省略代词 Eg. 1) John did all the work, and he did it well. 约翰做了全部工作，而且干得不错。（省略人称代词） 2) —When will he arrive? —You can never tell. 他什么时候到？——说不准。 （省略表示泛指的人称代词） 3) Please take off the old picture and throw it away. 请把那张旧画取下来扔掉。（省略人称代词） 4) She covered her face with her hands, as if to protect her eyes. 她用手蒙住脸，好像是为了保护眼睛。 （省略物主代词） 5) It’s important for the English-learners to master some learning skills. 对于英语学习者来说，掌握方法非常重要。 （省略it） 2.省略冠词 Eg. 1) The moon was slowly rising above the sea. 月亮慢慢从海上升起。 2) He is the tallest one in the class and the most excellent basketball player. 他在班里个子最高，篮球也打得最棒。 3) A teacher should have patience in his work. 教师在工作中应当有耐心。 4) We must make a comprehensive analysis of a problem before it can be properly solved. 我们必须对问题做全面的分析，才能妥善解决。 3.省略连词 Eg. 1) Early to rise and early to bed makes a man healthy. 早睡早起使人身体健康。 2) If winter comes, can spring be far behind? 冬天来了，春天还会远吗？ 3) John rose gloomily as the train stopped, for he was thinking of his ailing mother. 火车停了，约翰郁郁地站了起来，因为他想起了病中的母亲。 4) I suppose all of you have been told (the fact) that he has gone abroad. 大家应该都知道他出国的事了吧？ 5) This is the teacher who I always mention to you. 这就是我经常跟你提到的那位老师。 4. 省略介词 Eg. 1) The People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949. 一九四九年中华人民共和国成立。 （比较：中华人民共和国成立于一九四九年。） 2) Let’s meet at the school gate. 咱们学校门口见吧。 3) There is little difference between town and country in this region. 该地区已没什么城乡差别。 4) The products produced in our factory are good in quality and low in price. 我们厂的产品物美价廉。 （二）从修辞角度省略 Eg. 1) Williams Sidney Porter, who is known under his pen name, O. Henry, is one of the best known writers of America. 威廉·悉尼·波特尔，笔名欧·享利，是美国最著名的作家之一。 2) There was no snow, the leaves were gone from the trees, the grass was dead. 天未下雪，但叶落草枯。 3) University applicants who had worked at a job would receive preference over those who had not. 报考大学的人，有工作经验的优先录取。 4) Neither party shall cancel the contract without sufficient cause or reason. 双方均不得无故解除合同。 二
