UOPSellsFirstPFMD™TrayinAromaticsRevampUOPsoldasetofParallelFlowMultipleDowncomer(PFMD)traysin2011foruseinanIsomarUnitDeheptanizerfortheArabianFibersIndustrialCompany(IBNRUSHD)IR-2aromaticsdebottleneckingprojectinYanbu,SaudiArabia.Theobjectiveoftherevampistoincreaseparaxyleneproductcapacityandtomaximizebenzeneproduction.ThismarksthefirstcommercialsaleofPFMDtrays.Thedual-diameterdeheptanizercolumnwasidentifiedasabottleneckforthefutureexpansionrates.Abovethefeedpoint,PFMDtrayswerechosentoreplaceconventionalsievetraysinthe2800mmIDtopsectionduetotheirhighcapacitywithoutlossofefficiency,allowingfora1-for-1retraywiththirty-two(32)PFMDtrays.Duetothesignificantincreaseinliquidloadbelowthefeedpoint,highercapacityECMDTMtrayswerechosentoreplaceconventionalsievetraysinthe3200mmIDbottomsectionona5-for-4retraybasiswiththirty-four(34)ECMDtrays.Thecolumncapacityisexpectedtobelimitedbytheheavilyliquid-loadedbottomsection.TechnicalFeaturesThePFMDtrayisthelatestgenerationofUOPtraystomakeuseofparallelflowtoimprovetheefficiency.Thetrayisdividedintofourquadrants,eachseparatedbyadowncomer.Liquidspiralsdownthecolumnsothattheliquidineachcolumnquadrantisalwaysflowinginthesamedirectiononeachtray(seeFigure1).TheefficiencygainfromthistypeofflowisfrequentlyreferredtoasaLewisCaseIIenhancement.ThespiralflowliquidiscombinedwithMD™traytechnologysothatthePFMDtrayhasacapacitythatismorethananMDtrayandwithanefficiencythatisgreaterthananMDtrayandexpectedtobeequaltoaconventionaltray.Thebenefitofparallelflowisthattherisingvaporsareneverexposedtothesameliquidcompositionbetweentwotrays.Onconventionaldistillationtrays,theliquidcompositionattheinlettothedowncomerononetrayisthesameasthecompositionatthedowncomeroutletonthetraybelow.Thiscreatesa“pinchpoint”wherethereisnodrivingforceformasstransfer.Parallelfloweliminatesthispinchpoint(seeFigure2).Inadditiontotheuniqueparallelflowdesign,PFMDtrayscombinethefeaturesofotherUOPdistillationtraystooptimizecapacityandefficiency:•LikeothertraysintheMDfamily,PFMDtrayshavelo
