As part of an overall strategy to determine a long-term treatment option for AMD, a pilot passive treatment plant was constructed in 1994 at Wheal Jane Mine in Cornwall, UK. The plant consists of three separate systems (i) constructed aerobic reed beds designed to remove iron and arsenic (ii) an anaerobic cell to encourage reduction of sulphate and facilitate removal of zinc, copper, cadmium and the remaining iron as metal sulphides (iii)aerobic rock filters designed to promote the growth of algae and facilitate the precipitation of manganese. Biological aspects of acid mine drainage (AMD) The specific objectives of the biological components of the study are: 1.To obtain detailed knowledge of the microbial ecology and community dynamics of wetland ecosystems which are impacted by AMD. 2.To quantify rates of iron and sulphur oxidation and reduction in water and sediment (including anaerobic cell) samples from different locations and treatment sites at the Wheal Jane pilot plant. 3.To investigate correlations between the efficiency of wetland-mediated AMD remediation and biomass quantity, activity and composition. 4. To identify factors (biological, physico-chemical) which dictate or limit rates of microbial activities, and thereby to optimise system performance by manipulation/ stimulation of specific bacterial activities and to provide design criteria for sizing constructed wetlands. 5.To identify algal species that promote the precipitation of metals in the final stages of passiv
