China 410073 jin_nudt@ Abstract An adaptive method, referred as the Modified Empirical Mode Decomposition (MEMD) and its associated Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD), are presented for nonstationary signals processing. The MEMD-WVD based Range Instantaneous Doppler (RID) Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) imaging algorithm can reduce the cross-terms without loss of resolution for maneuvering targets. Keywords: radar imaging, inverse synthetic aperture radar, modified empirical mode decomposition 1 Introduction Huang et al . proposed the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) to achieve the time-frequency distribution (TFD) of nonstationary signals, which is a combination of the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and its associated Hilbert transform [1]. The EMD method decomposes the signal into a number of zero-mean AM-FM components, referred as Intrinsic Mode Function (IMF). The EMD is developed on real signals, which is easy to process complex signals. An idea is to apply HHT to the real part of the complex signal, but it gives the wrong TFD for nonanalytic signals.
