Lead-in (2 minutes) There was an American president who was strongly against slavery. He fought for the political rights of the black people all his life. At last slavery was abolished but he was shot at a theatre. Do you know who he was? (Abraham Lincoln) Who is the present American president?(Barack Obama) He is the first black president. This shows that black people have equal rights with white people now. They can be elected leaders of their country. But before the 1960s, the blacks were looked down upon in the U.S. In order to be treated with respect in the same way as other people, many freedom fighters fought for political rights for black people.
