On the Role of Cohesive Analysis of English Texts in the Process of E-C Translation Abstract Keeping the coherence of the whole text is the basic requirement of translation. Many people are completely puzzled about employing any other strategies to apply the coherent means in their translation. We often come to such translation problems as referential mistakes, misunderstanding of ellipsis, etc. Sometimes we even ignore the importance and the application of cohesion; even professional translators pay more attention to words, phrases or patterns than to the internal cohesion. The author tries to explore the complicated application of cohesive ties and chains to translation on the basis of Halliday and Hasan’s theory of cohesion in this paper. This paper begins with a brief review of the past research in the theory of cohesion and contrastive transition. Problems in usual translation work are listed, and causes of these problems are analyzed. Relative strategies are formulated and examples are given to illustrate the application of these strategies, so as to ensure the wholeness, strictness and accuracy of the textual translation. Indeed, cohesion analysis plays an important role in the process of English-Chinese translation.
