    doneonstone.Thatwasbackmany,manyyearsagoduringaperiodofwhichwehavefewrecordsand

    knowverylittle.Wedo,however,knowthattheRomanalphawasperfectedseveralthousandyearsago

    andthatourmodemletteringhasbeendevelopedfromit.Fromthattimeonwehaverecordsofthevarious

    changesinstylesofwritingofwhichthereweremany.Eachgenerationdevelopeditsownstylesthat,ina

    generalway,musthavebeenanimprovementoverprecedingstyles.Byhandwriting,werefertoalltypes

    ofplainandfancyformsoflettersthatwereusedtoconveythoughtorpreserverecords.

    Backinthedaysbeforetheprintingpressandothermachinessuchasthetypewriter,themonksandothers

    didalargeamountofbeautifulhandwriting.Theydevelopedthebeautifulartofilluminating.Whilethis

    workwasslowandlaborious,itsbeautycompelledpeopletoreadandrereadit.Theworkofthemonks

    servedaverydefinitepurposeandbecameveryvaluableasworksofart.
