TherehasbeensomeconfusiononwhetheritisacceptabletousealuminumconductorswheninstallingABBdrives.

Thisdocumentaddressessomeoftheconcernsandgivessomeguidanceonbestpractices.Whileinsomecasesitmay

beacceptabletousealuminumconductors,theuseofcopperconductorswouldbegreatlypreferred.

Themainconcernwhenusingaluminumconductorsisfortheeaseofoxidationonthecontactsurfaces.Withoutproper

installationproceduresandmaintenancethiscanleadtopoorconductivityatconnectionpointsthatresultsinhigh

resistancecausingunwantedheatingandpoorcurrentflow.

ThedriveinstallationmanualmaygiveinstructionsonusingaluminumcablesforIECinstallationsforsomeofdrive

ratings,butaluminumcablesarenotallowedforULNECinstallationsintheU.S.Seetheexamplebelowfromthe

overaluminumconductors.Besuretofollowanyapplicablelocalornationalcodesandifthechoiceismadetouse

•Ifconductorsarenotstrippedandusedimmediately,protecttheendfromoxidationwithacap.

•Stripthecablejustbeforeterminatingit.
