operationsleavemuchtobedesiredwithrespecttothequality,serviceability,andsafetyofcompletedstructures.Theshortcomingsoftheseoperationsbecameabundantlyclearwhenamagnitude7.6earthquakestrucknorthernPakistanonOctober8,2005,destroyingthousandsofbuildings,damagingbridges,andkillinganestimated79,000people.Theunusuallylowqualityofconstructionoperations
prevalentwasamajorcauseoftheimmensedevastation

Concretepouring
Iftheconcreteispouredontheground,thegroundshouldhaveenoughmoisturetopreventitfromabsorbingthemoistureintheconcrete.Ifnewconcreteistobeplacedonorneartheconcretethathasalreadybeensolidified,thesurfaceofthepouredconcreteshouldbecompletely
removed,preferablyusinghigh-pressureair,high-pressurewaterflow,or
wirebrushes.Thewatchshouldbewet,butthereshouldbenowatercollection.Asmallamountofgroutshouldbebrushedovertheentirearea,andthenalayerofmortarwithathicknessof1/2inchshouldbelaid
immediately.Newconcreteshouldbelaidonorbesidethemortar.
Inordertoreducethesegregationoftheconcreteduetotransportationafterpouring,theconcreteshouldbepreparedascloseaspossibletotheplacewhereitwaslastpoured.Itshouldbelayeredsothateachlayercanbecompacted.Thetimebetweenplacementsofeachlayershouldbelimitedtoguaranteeagoodcombinationofthenewlycast
