A Dream of Red Mansions translated by Yang Xianyi Gladys Yang and The Story of the Stone translated by David Hawkes John Minford are the best two populated and authentic translated versions of Hong Lou Meng. The paper is going to value whether these two versions can well convey the correct and deep meanings of poems in Hong Lou Meng. Key words: Hong Lou Meng; poetry translation; translation aesthetics 摘要 本文试图通过以翻译美学视角研究红楼梦的诗词翻译。杨宪益夫妇和大卫·霍克斯译本是当今最流行和权威的两个译本，通过这两者的比较，本文将深入探讨是否两个译本完美地诠释了红楼梦诗词的核心内涵。 关键词:红楼梦；诗词翻译；翻译美学 1 Introduction Hong Lou Meng ,composed by Cao Xueqin, is one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels. It is the masterpiece of China’s classical novel and is officially named the peak of China’s Novel. This great novel was created in 18th century, but it is still in its popularity after so many years,for it contains complex plots, distinguished characters, various branches of knowledge, all kinds of writing styles, elegant and vulgar language materials.Some scholars point out that Hong Lou Meng amounts to a museum full of Chinese literature language. And a redologist Zhou Ruzhang who specializes in Hong Lou Meng research also claims that every time I have a visit with foreigners, I always said that if you want to have a quick acknowledgement of Chinese culture, you’d better read Hong Lou Meng. I hold the view that Hong Lou Meng is a unique culture novel reflecting our Chinese culture. Indeed, Hong Lou Meng shows the profound and great Chinese culture for it involves in so many aspects, such as politics, folk traditions, architecture, costume,literature, food, medicine, religious and etc. Therefore, it is imaginable that translating this masterpiece is like climbing a steep mountain.
