PAGE PAGE 29 A Study on Chinese-English Film subtitles From The Perspective of Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory --A Case Study of The Taking of Tiger Mountain Abstract Peter Newmark wrote: “ Communicative translation attempts to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the original.” By this definition, I summarize four principles which are comprehensibility, economy, generic and equivalent effect principle to apply in film subtitles translation. Through the case study of The Taking of Tiger Mountain, I analyzed the concrete subtitles with these four principles. Key words: communicative translation theory film subtitles Chinese-English Translation 内容摘要 皮特·纽马克的交际翻译理论是使目标语读者收到的语言产生的理解效果与源语言读者的理解效果尽可能相接近。通过这个定义得出交集翻译理论的重点在于读者和效果两个关键词。 本文将纽马克的交际翻译理论和电影字幕翻译结合起来，总结出在交集翻译理论指导下四个电影字幕翻译原则，并运用这四个原则具体分析了电影《智取威虎山》的字幕翻译。 关键词：交际翻译理论电影字幕翻译汉译英 I. Introduction A. Studies of film subtitles in western countries 1.Original studies of film subtitles in western countries The researches done by western scholars are much earlier than studies of film subtitles translation studies in China. The earliest film translation study began in western countries in 1976 when Istvan Fordor published a book called Film dubbing : phonetic, semiotic, esthetic and psychological aspects. After this book, film translation were drawn more and more attention. Studies in this filed developed quickly. During 1990s, film translation studies became a popular topic so the researches of film translation boomed. Many research results published during this time. 2.Several perspectives of western researches on film subtitling There are two main perspective of film subtitling among western researches. One important perspective of western studies on film subtitles translation called polysystem. (Karamitroglou, 2000:45), another is translation strategies study(Dong Haiya, 2007:11).
