Theapplicabilityandlimitationoftheseindexesareanalyzed, especiallytoirregulartallbuildingsbeyondthecode- specification.It′shardtocalculatingthemcorrectlyandthecalculationresultscannotguaranteethesafetyofhighrise buildingseveniftheymeetthedemandsofthecode.Theperformance-basedseismicdesign(PBSD)methodis proposedinUSAin90 ′,s20 thcentury, andithasbeengraduallyappliedinstructuraldesignoftallbuildingsbeyond thecode-specificationinourcountry.Thispaperpresentsthathowtoselecttheperformanceobjectivesandhowto carryouttheperformance-basedseismicdesignaccordingtotheCode-exceedingtypesanddegreesofhighrise building.sApplicationsofthePBSDmethodonsomeengineeringproject,ssuchasChangzhouKainaPlaz,aZhejiang NewWorldWealthCente,rNingboGlobalShippingPlaza, andWenzhouLuchengPlaz,aarealsointroduced.
