Reporting what people say Tina to Pansy Pansy to Tony ● I get a generous amount of pocket money. ● My mother does most of the housework at home. ● I watch TV for about 15 hours each week. ● Tina says that she gets a generous amount of money. ● She says that her mother does most of the housework in their home. ● She says that she watches TV for about 15 hours each week. Sometimes we want to tell a person what someone has told us. We often use reported speech to tell people what someone has told us. Try to report these statements without using that. She says, “I never lie to my parents.” They say to me, “You should water the flowers every morning. ‘My parents often say ‘No’ when I ask for things.’ (He says…) She says she never lies to her parents. They tell me I should water the flowers every morning. He says his parents often say ‘No’ when he asks for things. Reporting what people say. Introduce your daily life or family life to your desk mate or any other one. Then he or she reports it to others. Verb tense changes also characterize other situations using indirect speech.
