Palimpsest: On the Traces of Fairy Tale Rewriting in “Glass Coffin” by A.S.Byatt LIANG Xiao-dong (Faculty of Foreign Languages, He’nan Normal University, Xinxiang 453007, China ) Abstract: Palimpsest is an important marker of intertextuality which is discernible in A.S. Byatt’s novels. It is best presented by the rewritings of many literary canons including some European fairy tales. This paperthereforetries to make an intertextual study of the “Glass Coffin” in her seminal novel Possession with reference to the Grimms’ Snow White, its possible hypotext. Through detailed analyses of the layers of rewriting, concerning the traces of the old story, the transmotivization of the characters and the possible intentions of its author, this paper concludes that all texts are intertextual; an individual writer owes all his/her literary achievements to literary traditions and makes new contributions in return; and hence, literary traditions get developed in the process of incessant rewritings.
