Unit 6b Cultural Diversity Useful Terms Cultural Diversity (文化差异): Differences in race, ethnicity, language, nationality, or religion among various groups within a community, organization, or nation. Salary Gains (加薪/涨工资): Pay raise Useful Terms Cultural Norms (文化规范): Cultural norms are behavior patterns that are typical of specific groups. Cultural norms often are so strongly ingrained in an individuals daily life that the individual may be unaware of certain behaviors. Until these behaviors are seen in the context of a different culture with different values and beliefs, the individual may have difficulty recognizing and changing them. Discharge (解雇): The termination of someones employment (leaving him/her free to depart). Useful Terms Semi-structured Interview (半结构化的访谈方法): The interviewer is given a framework for conducting the interview, and guidance on questions and further probes which may be used, but also has a lot of flexibility in the way the questions are posed, the order in which they are taken, etc. Remuneration (薪酬): Commonly called payroll. Includes wages, commissions, bonuses, overtime pay, pay for holidays, vacations and sickness, payment for piece work, value of meals and lodging and other substitutes for money. Cultural Diversity Decision-making In many cultures decisions on how to view the world, which gods to believe in, which profession to learn, where to live and whom to marry are, in fact, more influenced by the social and cultural context than by individual decisions. Similarly, some cultural factors would also influence the process of decision making in a business setting. Cultural Diversity Decision-Making (1) Highly individualist cultures promote independence and self-reliance. These cultures reinforce risk taking and confrontational approaches aimed at increasing personal benefits even at the cost of others; In highly collectivist cultures, the value system promotes obedience and conformity to the norms of the in-group.
