Assess Your Understanding 323 The Leader as a Stress Manager Situations like the one described above are not unusual for a leader, nor are they confined to the first day on a new job. Every leader is faced with similar situations-situations which require some understanding of the sources and management of stress. As we learn more about the causes and related costs of stress in an organization, the role of the leader as stress manager continues to take on increased importance. Leaders must not only manage stress for their subordinates, they must also manage their own. As we know, stress is transferable from one person to another. Perceived stress in the leader is particularly contagious. While there is no panacea for dealing with stress, this chapter will attempt to provide the leader with some meaningful tools for assessing and managing stress at the individual, group, and organizational level. In the process, we will attempt to answer the two questions raised in Chapter 7 (Individual Stress and Adjustment): -How can individuals, and in particular the leader, reduce stress and cope more effectively with the stressful situations which are unavoidable? -What can the leader do to manage more effectively the stress on others within the organization? We will begin by briefly reviewing key concepts from Chapter 7 which pertain to stress management. We will then discuss recognition of the level and sources of stress in organizati
