ABSTRACTThereareseveralacademictheoriesanddiscoveriesthatcauseshockinginfluencesontheacademiccirclesintheworld.Certainly,Darwinismisamongthem.Newtondevelopsthescienceoftheseventeenthcenturyastepforwardwithhisdiscoveryofthelawthatgovernstheuniverse.While,Darwinchangesscienceofthenineteenthcenturyandshockstheworldwithhistheoryofevolution.ManyscientistslayfoundationsforDarwinism:Lamarkchallengesthetheorythattheoriginalspeciesareunchangeable.Lyellpopularizestheuniformitarianism,thetheoryoftheevolutionofthesurfaceoftheearth.Inthemeanwhile,KarlMarksputsforwardtheconceptionofdevelopmentpointingoutthatallthethingsarenotstableandareduringtheprocessofchanging.Darwinchallengesthewesternreligiousbeliefsupportedbytheoriginofspecies,theoryofadaptation,theoryofevolution,andheusessamplesandfossilsasevidence.Darwinismspreadsintoalmosteveryfieldofeverylayeraroundtheworld,literatureisinevitable.DreiseristhefirstoutstandingwriterandonethatcannotbeneglectedinthetwentiethcenturyAmericanliterature,theforerunnerofAmericanmodernnovel.Comparedwithhiscontemporarywriters,Dreiseralwayscreatesinauniqueway,hemakescontributionstotheAmericanliteraturetransformingfromtheearlyVictorianandHowellsliteraturestyletothemodernliteraturestyle.Noonecoulddaretoexposethereallife,thebeautyandtheterror.HebreakstheconstraintofthetraditionalAmericanliterature.Dreiser?stwonovelsJennieGerhardtandSisterCarriearedealingsimilarmaterialsbutcauseseverlydifferentreactionsamongthereaders.Inrecentyears,uncountablestudiesandresearcheshavebeendoneonDreiser?sworks.MajorityofthemaresurroundingthenaturalisminDreiser?snovels.Manywaysofanalysishavebeenappliedsuchashistoricalbiographycriticism,textualcriticism,consumerculturecriticism,psychologicalanalysis,feminism,andconstructivism.ScholarstrytoanalyzetheconnotationandartisticcharactersofDreiser?sworksviavariousperspectives.ThoughSisterCarrieandTheTragedyofAmericaareoftenmentionedandstudied.theattentiononJennieGerhardtismuchless.EvenlesscomparativestudiesaredonebetweenJennieGerhar
